Performance Opportunities

Music@Noon Student Recitals

Music@Noon Student Recitals are presented toward the end of each quarter as part of the Music@Noon concert series. Performances may be solo or ensemble. There is a Music@Noon Student Composer Recital at the end of the Spring Quarter. Please contact the Music Department Office for more information.

Annual Concerto/Aria Competition

During the fall quarter, the Santa Clara University Symphony Orchestra sponsors a competition to select Santa Clara students to perform as soloists in the Orchestra's Winter concert. Instrumentalists prepare a concerto movement and singers prepare two contrasting arias. Winners may not compete again the following year. This competition is adjudicated by off-campus judges and is open to all music students and non-majors taking private instruction. Contact the Music Department Office for more information and to sign up.

Paid Performances

From time to time, the Department of Music gets requests for students to perform at on and off-campus events. If you are interested in being considered for this, contact the Music Department Office.

Junior and Senior Recitals

Registration is open to Music Majors, Music Minors, and Musical Theatre Minors. Recitals are capstone opportunities for music students to present their work as performers/composers/sound artists. To reserve a student recital date you must complete and submit a Student Recital Request form to the Music Department Office. Please read below for more information about the process.

Senior Recitals (2 units)

Senior Recitals take place in the Spring Quarter ONLY, unless by permission of the department chair, in consultation with the senior faculty. Senior Recitals must include 45-60 minutes of music. Variations from this format (e.g. a lecture-recital, or changes to the duration and format of the program) must be discussed and approved with your applied instructor(s) and faculty advisor prior to registration. During the quarter of your recital, you must be registered for the appropriate recital credit and your applied lesson(s) in the area of your performance. The music department manager will automatically register you for your recital section prior to the quarter of your recital. A Senior Recital requires a pre-recital hearing before a faculty committee and must include 45 to 60 minutes of music. Senior Recital Hearings must take place within the first four weeks of the spring quarter and must be attended by the student's primary teacher and one member of the senior music faculty. In the case of students who are presenting recitals on multiple instruments or voice, then each of those teachers must be present. Students may choose to use their Winter Jury as their Recital Hearing if their recital has been scheduled within the first four weeks of the following quarter.

Dates and times are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and will be confirmed upon submission of the completed reservation form to the Music Department Office.

Junior Recitals (1 unit)

Junior Recitals take place in the Winter Quarter ONLY, except by permission of the department chair, in consultation with the senior faculty. A Junior Recital requires a pre-recital hearing, and must be 30-45 minutes in length (including breaks and intermission), or 30 minutes of music per student if shared with another student. Junior Recitals must include 30-45 minutes of music. For purposes of scheduling, students are encouraged to share Junior Recitals with another student. During the quarter of your recital, you must be registered for the appropriate recital credit and your applied lesson(s) in the area of your performance. The music department manager will automatically register you for your recital section prior to the quarter of your recital. Junior Recital Hearings must take place within the first four weeks of the Winter Quarter and must be attended by the student's primary teacher and one member of the senior music faculty. In the case of students who are presenting recitals on multiple instruments or voice, then each of those teachers must be present. Students may choose to use their Fall Jury as their recital hearing if their recital has been scheduled within the first four weeks of the following quarter.

Dates and times are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and will be confirmed upon submission of the completed reservation form to the Music Department Office.

Procedures

To begin the process, you must attend the mandatory recital meeting in the Fall Quarter. If you have an unavoidable conflict, you must meet individually with the Music Department Chair. Following the meeting, you must submit the Junior/Senior Recital Request Form to the department. You will then receive an email from the Department Chair with the dates and times for your recital, dress rehearsal, and pre-recital hearing asking for you to confirm your date. You must respond to the Department Chair's email to confirm your assigned dates. You must also meet with your Faculty Advisor to discuss your general plans for your recital.

In the last two weeks of the quarter prior to your recital, you must schedule and attend your production meeting with your recital advisor and and the SCU Presents Production Manager to discuss setup needs, equipment, and logistical needs for the performance. An event form must be completed and submitted 4 weeks prior to your recital, which should be reviewed and approved by your faculty advisor. You must complete your scheduled pre-recital hearing, where all repertoire should be well-prepared and rehearsed, and all participants in your recital must attend.

Your complete program information is due to the music department manager and your faculty advisor 2 weeks prior to your recital date. Finally, you and all participants in your recital must attend your dress rehearsal before you perform your Recital!

Recital Hall Reservations for Rehearsals

Students are responsible for reservation of the Recital Hall with the Music Department Office to ensure they have time in the hall for practice and rehearsals prior to the recital. Students are also responsible for reserving any evening or weekend practice time in the hall before their performance with the Music Department Office.

Accompanists

For Music Department degree recitals, an accompanist (if needed) will be provided by the Department of Music. It is the responsibility of the student to arrange all rehearsal times with their accompanist including a dress rehearsal. Music is due one month in advance of the recital. Contact Debra Lambert for more information.

Receptions

If a post-recital reception is desired, students are fully responsible for its organization and clean-up. Contact the Music Department Office for information.
